Is there no way to know how many times the server or API is being called? My hunch is that twitter.com is less reliable trending mechanism that it used to be.
Facebook ftw! – No. Really.
Both of my grandmothers are on Facebook because it is intuitive and it helps them connect with their loved ones (and friends) and makes it easy to share photos, events, updates.
Micro blogging is here to stay, and it has already changed the game in many ways – but it is not mass market in the way that facebook is, and I too suspect it may be reaching its apex.
Looking forward to the dust settling a bit on the social media landscape.

Try comparing the 6 month or one year Compete data for Twitter to that for Facebook. FB is still at much higher absolute numbers, but the shape, the trending, for Facebook is pretty much identical to Twitter’s.
Does that change what you were thinking for “but still” or reenforce it?
Could this be caused by the summer holidays?
It would be interesting to see last years graph was over the same period.
I suspect it’s due to twitter NEVER working! The past three weeks I barely ever get on. It’s a 503 error almost all of the time now! No fail whale just a dramatic error. As an avid user for over two years I’m even getting fed up with this.
Flat… ok but the numbers are still huge.
Also, I don’t think facebook and twitter are comparable with regard to how you can use them. Twitter is world wide chatroom that allows you to search by topical keywords. You can find and follow anyone.
Facebook is still mostly by invitation only. Finding friends and fans within facebook requires a lot of work. I guess that a lot come from an original non-facebook source.
John, you are certainly king of the fads. Will you stop using their service if they become less popular?
