  1. I actually have a question about a service like this. What happens if the web service you run competes with Google? (Especially now that Google seems to have its fingers in almost every single possible web-based pie nowadays.. video, chat, IM, blogging, social networks, telephony, search, ads, word processing, spreadsheets, photo management, mapping, etc. etc.) How neutral will Google be, with respect to your web-based company, when you’re running on Google’s platform?

And let’s suppose that you really do manage to create some new value, create a successful Web company while running on Google hardware. How long will it be before Google duplicates (co-opts?) what you’ve done? Especially if you manage to succeed in creating a successful Web company that doesn’t run AdSense. Is Google basically just trying to crowdsource its way into the next big web application?

I don’t know the answers to these questions. I just have to wonder/worry about the prudence of handing the core of your Web business over to a company whose goal it is to “organize all the world’s information”..including all the information you yourself are trying to organize through the Web company that you are now hosting at Google.

Am I crazy by even worrying about something like this? Somebody please correct my perceptions, if so.

  2. See how nice SearchEnginesWeb is – here are live videos of the event……Scoble has 4 segements – the first is an chat with well known tech bloggers attending, the last three are presentations about the release itself

BTW: Could you consider taking OFF the NoFollow for trusted contributors so that they can get some link love from this PR 8 site?????????????? Those who don’t abuse the privilege are a different clss of peoples

  3. How will Google handle competitors in its services?
Search “Federated Media”, the name of a competing company, serving ads; search “Microsoft Office”, the name of a competing office software; search “WordPress”, “Yahoo!”, “Hotmail”. . .
I’m assuming they will go on treating them like they have int he past.

Search Engine Web: you’ll have link-love when you stay on topic, be a grown up that doesn’t think multiple question mark induce relevancy and write on a subject that doesn’t have more then a hundred blogs have far clearer insights then what you can offer.

  4. SEW & Bertil,

I wonder if / when another search engine will be launched that DOESN’T discriminate between links including “nofollow” and no “nofollow” — in other words: a search engine that behaves as if all links are supposed to be followed.

I have always found Google’s stupid idea re “nofollow” absolutely ludicrous (since that is an blatant admission that the so-called ranking algorithm is now actually bogus).

Seems like somebody could “clean up” if they rolled out such an engine — I mean: if people actually believe that algorithmic search results are “better” than people / experts.

  5. Holy crap. Yahoo just announced a possible deal with Google on search ads. And Microsoft is crying anti trust foul. Wow.

  6. MSFT comment:

    MICROSOFT COMMENTS ON YAHOO! ANNOUNCEMENT

REDMOND, Wash. — April 9, 2008 — Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) today issued the following statement from Brad Smith, Microsoft’s General Counsel, related to an announcement today by Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO:

“Any definitive agreement between Yahoo! and Google would consolidate over 90% of the search advertising market in Google’s hands. This would make the market far less competitive, in sharp contrast to our own proposal to acquire Yahoo! We will assess closely all of our options. Our proposal remains the only alternative put forward that offers Yahoo! shareholders full and fair value for their shares, gives every shareholder a vote on the future of the company, and enhances choice for content creators, advertisers, and consumers.”

  7. John writes: “Holy crap. Yahoo just announced a possible deal with Google on search ads.

Danny Sullivan (on his blog) reports that this search ad deal is just “a way for Google to test how well Yahoo monetizes“.

Would anyone here care to discuss what that phrase means? What would it mean for Google to test how well Yahoo monetizes? What is the possible experimental setup? What would the possible outcomes be?

What I mean is, suppose Google put their ads on Yahoo. Then you basically have the exact same setup as on Google. (1) The Query itself, (2) SERPs on the left, (3) Ads on the right.

Now, suppose, for the exact same query, users on Yahoo click more ads than on Google? What does that mean? Does that mean the Yahoo users are more ad-friendly? Or does it mean that the users are finding fewer-relevant Yahoo SERPs, and therefore turns more readily to the ads?

And vice versa. Suppose users are Yahoo click fewer ads than on Google, for the exact same queries. Does that mean Yahoo users are less ad friendly, or does it mean that Yahoo SERPs are better than Google SERPs, because Yahoo users have their information needs satisfied in the SERP and never need to click an ad?

I am curious about how Google will interpret whatever data they receive.. whether they’ll blame the user or blame the SERP. There are two factors here, and I’m curious about how Google would be controlling for both factors, simultaneously. Google claims that SERPs are independent of ads, but I am not so sure.
