Inevitable. From ClickZ:
Google is testing ads on its mobile search interfaces in the U.S., U.K. and Germany a spokesperson has confirmed. The deal is similar to a pilot the company began testing in Japan earlier this year.

Mobile advertising is the next big thing – especially for the Hispanic market; there’s many talks and podcasts I have listeded to from recent Ad-Tech’s, Search Engine Strategies, IMedia Brand Summits, etc, all saying the same thing.
It looks like they might also be incorporating pay-per-call as part of this test. If you do a search for “delta” or “us airways” the ad contains a phone number for Expedia.
More examples of terms that trigger ads in my post on the topic:
I agree Mobile Advertising is going to be huge but one has to be very careful to not muddy the “first impression” or else it has the risk of having the same fate as some of the failures of the past. Carriers are in good position to exploit the wealth of personal information they have but likes of Google and Yahoo are better at executing product strategies, so it will be interesting to watch the evolution.
