Way back in 2002, Josh Quittner, who is a pal and also the Editor of Business 2.0, took a risk on a down-and-out dot-com publishing exec and contracted me to write a column for his magazine, the only one left after the Standard and its ilk bit the dust. But when I got the Time Inc. contract (B2’s owners,) I was bereft. I had an issue with the fact that what I wrote would be behind AOL/TW’s paywall. So I requested, nice as pie, that I be able to post my columns here, on this site. Josh agreed, and the rest is history.
Well, all that’s moot now. CNNMoney is picking up my column, and all of B2 for that matter, and it’s all free.
Here’s everything I ever wrote for Josh!
Enjoy, I sure as heck will!
John, don’t you find it funny that the very companies that claim to have the “inside track” on business trends are so incredibly late to the game? It’s like Sally Struthers pitching the Atkins program!
Congratulations on the CNN gig John! Of course I’m expecting FEDERATED MEDIA to pay we publishers much better than CNN … soon … right?
I still have it. The post reminded me of it. I stowed it away in a clear storage box in our spare bedroom along with some old fight programs. It, is a copy of the Dec. 27, 1999 – Jan. 3 2000 issue of the Industry Standard – The 1999 Year in Review. 264 pages – too many ads to count. Never saw anything like it. I knew it was special and that I needed to keep a copy.
Phase2Media had the back cover which probably cost them a boatload; it doesn’t look like they made the transition to “2.0”.
Congrats on the new gig.
hi John,
Congratulations to the CNN gig ๐
This is a very good start in 2006!
hi John,
thats great, Congratulations to the CNN gig 80)
what is the next ๐ฎ ๐
Just wanted to clarify that John is still writing for Business 2.0; it’s just that CNNMoney.com is now the website where you’ll find Business 2.0 content, including John’s column. (CNNMoney, like Business 2.0 is a subsidiary of Time Warner; specifically, it’s a joint venture of CNN Broadcasting and Time Inc.’s Fortune Group, for those keeping score.)
Not that I’d ever begrudge John a gig with CNN, but this is a case of “Say hello to the new online publisher, same as the old online publisher.”
I’m very pleased that John’s columns are available without a pay wall, too.
