Here’s a very interesting recent piece from the New Yorker, talking about technology patents and litigation.

What is so very hard to understand is:
1- Google can afford the Best and Brightest Legal team of any company, anywhere.
2- They have the finances to thoroughly research any possible patents or gray areas before undertaking ANY new service.
Are they simply NOT researching possible disputes beforehand – or – deciding with a “Let them Sue Us, if they can afford it :LOL ” attitude?
Have they made any endeavors to contact any of the patent holders for services they are developing, and perhaps ATTEMPT to work something out, beforehand?
Remember the “Don’t be Evil” motto?
This adds some justification to patent holders who do file lawsuits – whether of not, the patent has been sitting around unused.
“Why didn’t they just contact us and ASK to work something out!?”
Years from now, it would NOT be surprising to see Google itself, filing a number of patent infringement suits, they feel others have violated!

If you look at the actual patents you’d understand why Google ignored them. They have to do with least cost routing of telephone calls — which has next to nothing to do with what Google Talk does.
