767The Wall St. Journal – which loves this kind of stuff – has a “their’s is bigger than yours” piece (reg required) about the pair’s new 767 jet – which they bought for personal use.

On the road, Sergey Brin and Larry Page have owned environmentally friendly hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius. In the air, they apparently prefer something roomier.

Google Inc.’s two billionaire founders, both 32 years old, will soon be cruising the skies in a Boeing 767 wide-body airliner. They bought the used plane earlier this year, Mr. Page says….

Tech moguls delight in public one-upmanship and the Google founders’ 767 raises the bar. Microsoft Corp. co-founder Paul Allen owns a fleet of aircraft, but his flagships — two Boeing 757s — are smaller than Messrs. Brin and Page’s 767. It also marks a new level of consumption by the Google executives, who have shunned most trappings of the super-rich despite a combined net worth estimated at more than $20 billion.

The piece is fascinating for its obsession with detail about this purchase.

  1. what’s next, flight.google.com? Oh well, what did you expect, they may as well buy a small country some where and call it Google…

  2. Why you think its sad? .If the plane is bought by Google and sergey/larry use it for personal purposes then its wrong but what the heck is wrong in buying it with their own money?.

Bottomline is its just a toy!…It maybe Lexus for you and me but a 767 for a billionare 🙂

  3. LOL
Now I see why they took out the office space at old Moffett Field. They can fly right to the office steps.
Can’t you imagine seeing the Google logo on the side of one of those blimp hangars from the 101?

  4. isnt the WSJ interested because the Google guys are so vocal about their altrusitic attitudes and priuses and the like? note the WSJ didnt do a piece when casino mogul and multi-billionaire sheldon adelson bought his 767 — maybe because its entirely consistent with mr. adelson’s other attitudes and actions, etc?

  5. >>Can’t you imagine seeing the Google logo on the side of one of those blimp hangars from the 101?

Oh my yes, and the side not visible from the freeway could be painted in perspective so it appears normal in the satellite shot.

The blimp hangers are also wonderful landmarks when approaching SFO on a commercial airliner, it would be the best billboard ever.

  6. May be they can :

    (1) Fund Pluggable Hybrids research ?
Easing energy problem might change the world.

    (2) Green subsidies to rapidly growing nations ?
