I have no doubt that by 2011 internet ads will surpass newspaper ads in revenue. With the speed at which online advertising is growing, this could even happen sooner. More and more people are coming to depend on the internet as their source for up-to-date news, information, and now, even shopping. Businesses of all types will not want to be left out of a potential customer base as large as this making online ads essential. Thus, as the number of internet ads continue to rise while newspaper advertising remains stagnant, they will inevitably surpass newspaper ads in revenue in the next 5 years.
Personally think this is a case of human beings under estimating change in long term and over estimating change in short term. The relevancy of advertising on the Internet will just continue to grow as we move to better models of advertising on internet based videos, TV, music, location based services and the growth of new terminals accessing the internet and bringing mobility to users. The storm is here now, not in 4 years.
