Yahoo Wins Search Spot on Asian Version of Firefox

By - December 01, 2005

Yesterday Mozilla announced version 1.5 of its Firefox browser, which by many accounts is now near 15% of market penetration in the US. Google is the built in search engine for Firefox in the US, but Yahoo and Mozilla announced that Yahoo will have that spot for China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. This shows that while many feel Google owns the world of search, Yahoo in fact has more weight to throw around in certain key markets.

Mitchell’s post (CEO Mozilla) is here.

Just because Firefox has a gazillion downloads doesn’t mean we’re using it. I gave up because of its poor embedded handling. Ditto Opera and Konqueror. Get it right, guys, and we’ll use them.

I lived in Japan for one year…Yahoo *owns* the internet there, at least as far as US-based players are concerned…

Ken: John was referring to search- and website-measured usage numbers (unique users per week or other measures of Firefox user agent share), not download numbers.

But no matter, I’m here to help: what embedded handling problems did you see? If you mean plugins, which ones? Please feel free to mail me, or file bugs (http://www.mozilla.org/bugs/). Thanks,

“Yahoo *owns* the internet there, at least as far as US-based players are concerned”

Nice point except for Yahoo Japan is not purely a US player, its more of a Japanese player (owned by Softbank)using/partnered with a US brand.

And yeah, Yahoo is the Internet here.
