Huh. I know Google integrates maps with local, but this feels new. Thanks to reader Richard Lusk.
BTW, Andrew Chen noticed it as well, and has a nice post here. Update: Google has sent out its release on this, it's in the extended entry. Update 2 - the buzz on this is pretty good, including a nice review from Gary, though he did notice that Osama is apparently hiding out at the Googleplex...

Really like the new GoogleMaps, love the extremely accurate street positioning when I did a few test addresses by use of the dropshadow ballon-ponters for exampe, blows my old standby YahooMaps clearly off the radar, but, BUT it's still in obvious beta, Sigh, as evidenced that none of the "link to this map" links worked and I really did want to replaced some YahooMap links on some of my pages with some new GoogleMap ones.
Oh, well, hopefully they'll correct that soon.
Still missing some key features of Yahoo! Maps, such as searching for nearby businesses of various kinds, which I now use instead of (or sometimes in conjunction with) Zagat's to find out where to go. I'm sure it won't be long until Google Maps has all the bells and whistles.
To correct myself - it does have some of those features in the Local Search tab, though I'd still assert they're not intuitive.
