Yahoo Desktop Search Launches

Well, the embargo is off, and YDS has launched, or will Tuesday. Here's where to find it. (I think - it only works with the PC)

Initial coverage here (Silicon Beat), and I am sure far more places will cover it as the day rolls on.

Meanwhile, Blinkx' Mac version is now out as well, I have downloaded the client and look forward to trying it out. It's called an "0.5 beta" so if it erases my entire hard drive....

Yahoo! Desktop Search launched this morning (via). YDS is based on X1, which until now has been an $80 to $100 piece of software. I've been using X1 since January or February 2004, and it's great. As I wrote in [Read More]

Did Blinkx work for you? It won't allow me to install claiming I don't have permission rights anywhere on my system. Nice.

I've used X1 for years, and believe it's the best desktop search. Though the other Bigs got out of the gate first, X1 (now YDS) is fantastic, miles better than Google's. The only other desktop search I've seen that was close is Copernic.

(I wrote an testimonial to X1 in March of 2004 in the comments of Joho the Blog: http://www.hyperorg.com/blogger/mtarchive/002473.html)

thanks
nate

nate, that's not that useful given neither X1 or Copernic are even out on the Mac!!

At last, a MAC version of blinkx. I had a couple of problems to start with, but seems to be running ok now. I've used the PC version for the last 3 months, but I mostly use a MAC, so I'm a happy boy. It's still pre-beta, so I'd expect a few glitches but I'm sure these guys will iron them out soon enough. Hats off to them!

What's with this hype around the desktop search? My guesses next to searching the desktop:
- desktop search is an entry to personalised search (since the data at the desktop is your profile, and resumes of this profile could be sent to any web-search service which uses it for its ranking)
- desktop search is an entry to broadband-content search (since the indexing of broadband content has to be done at the edges of the network, where the intelligence should reside ideally; P2P search and we have E2E again)

It's also an entry into enterprise search, from a bottom-up direction. The top down approach has been, well, let's just say it's still in beta.

After the hard time I gave you when you posted the Blinx press release in its entirety, I'll be very interested in what your experience is. I hope they did a better job on the Mac.
