  1. That’s weird, because they’re still hiring. A friend of mine took a full-time engineering job there earlier this week, the same day they gave him the offer.

    The most obvious explanation is Robert’s, but I wouldn’t rule out the sort of confusion that’s regrettably common at companies the size of Google.

  2. I agree with Robert’s comment. Google is more recession-proof than the typical bricks/mortar company, plus historically, they’ve tended to care less about meeting wall street’s earnings expectations. Add to that, that they’ve got billions in the bank. With the ‘recession’, they’ve got an excuse to get rid of the dead weight.
