This is huge for Twitter. As search becomes totally incorporated into the Twitter interface, the service will hit a critical inflection point. Search as its interface is the problem and the solution, and it’s great to see the progress being made (yes, finally). Twitter people search.

As for why I am so all over search as key to Twitter, I’ve got a much longer post in me about that, but at the end of the day, it’s way too hard to figure out how to make Twitter useful for “normal people” – IE those not in the ourosborosphere. Search will help solve that, and at the same time, create the inventory for TweetSense to emerge.

  1. Twitter can barely keep their servers up trying to handle the load of serving text 140 characters at a time. You’ll forgive me if I don’t have much faith in their ability to solve a slightly more nontrivial problem like search.

  2. I find this very exciting as searching for people was both arcane and antiquated. now how will this change the number of followers or followees??

  3. Re “orousborousphere,” it’s spelled ouroboros — or ourorboros, oroborus, uroboros, or uroborus — there is no ess in the second syllable. (From the Greek for “tail-eating snake.”)

  4. @xensen I made the change, but at the end of the day, the spelling I used is the one with the juice. We’ll see if that changes. I am not a structuralist grammarian in terms of language. What we agree to, is what is.

  5. Andrew — I wouldn’t count them out so fast… They are working at it, this stuff takes time and the first step is to do the launch…and let users test it out, collect data, etc. Search is a very important part of every business online and it will be implemented with Twitter as well to serve further expand their product/service offering to a more wider audience. It will definitely draw more people and interest as a whole.

2009 is going to be big for Twitter!

    Best,
    Mike

  6. Thanks, John. I agree usage trumps prescription. I know this is esoteric in the extreme to most folks — thanks for indulging me. FWIW, ouroboros yields 845,000 Google results and ourosboros 499.

why not just use “sex” instead?

  10. I actually find twitter a really easy, fast to use service. You can ask it a question and provides the answer to almost anything. Over time, obviously more keywords will be added and more answers provided for the end user as. Give it a few more years 🙂
