Yahoo and MySpace

I dunno. At first blush, it makes no sense to me (TC). If it happens, I hope they put someone in who can really lead…. Why give away 25% of your company to get something when you have a new CEO, an embattled image, and freaked out senior staff?…

Why give away 25% of your company to get something when you have a new CEO, an embattled image, and freaked out senior staff? It would smack of desperation, would it not? And I thought Murdoch viewed MySpace as critical to Newscorp’s future?

  1. That’s quite interesting, considering what Murdoch said about Google:

  2. Seriously…a teenie-bopper spam-plagued nightmare at the bargain price of $12B. Yahoo could build a better social networking site with the talent in house. I can’t imagine that they don’t already have all the code laying around somewhere.

I hope Yahoo knows better than to buy News Corp’s garbage. By the time the majority of MySpace users are of age to get a credit card they will realize how lame the site is.

Why does anyone think that site has a future?

  3. while i wholeheartedly agree that for the most part myspace is “a teenie-bopper spam-plagued nightmare,” i see a very lucrative future for the site in the entertainment industry. while teeny boppers will grow up and eventually lose interest in creating silly personal profiles, what will displace that shift in a big way (a process already in motion) is the explosion of musicians who use the site for exposure. there is a very real change happening now from the old paradigm of booking agents or record execs saying “send in your demo” to “send me the link to your myspace site.”

so unless the music industry somehow implodes in on itself, and because there is infinitely more money in the music industry than the “look at my tattoos” industry, i think yahoo may be onto something…

  4. MySpace is not only teeny boppers, actually more people 30 to 50 are signing in than 14 year olds from what I have read.
Yahoo! kills the Google deal and sends valuable contextual ads to individual profiles, something Google has failed miserably at doing for MySpace.
….and why is Murdoch OK with this deal.
He turns 580 mil. into 12 billion. LOL Genius!

  5. Please folks get a grip. For all their problems Yahoo is a battle-hardened Internet company with a broad base of revenue streams which include search, graphical and paid services. MySpace is an unproven “one-trick” pony. There’s literally no comparison.

Yahoo has weathered many storms. MySpace is just beginning.

This would be wildly viewed as an act of desparation.
