It has to deal with making judgements about what is right and wrong. See this piece from the Times:

YouTube users can flag any video as containing pornography, mature content or graphic violence, depicting illegal acts or being racially or ethnically offensive. A video is removed — as Ms. Malkin’s was on Sept. 28 — only if a review by the company’s customer support department agrees that it is inappropriate, or that the video is on its face in violation of the site’s terms of use.

But the incident raised some questions about the fine line YouTube’s administrators walk when they decide to respond to users’ complaints about contributions to the site — a mechanism that is fraught with the potential for vindictive shenanigans.

  1. You are comparing some minion at You Tube to the corporate policy of “Don’t be evil” Google? I don’t think so.

Whoever decided to pull Malkin’s video decided the issue from a US political point of view. To him/her it was a very simple judgment. Here was a right wing, Asian-American, ping pong shooting collaborator (Wonkette and Denton) talking about intolerant fascists. One mustn’t’ allow these closed minded people to prattle on about intolerant people. We must be tolerant of others…don’t you know.

Obviously, it ended up being a little more complicated than that but the initial decision was not difficult. A verdict made by a child hopefully is not official corporate policy of a 1.6 billion (?) dollar company.

i think too. but a good deal for google. i think Microsoft and Yahoo are interested too at youtube and Google get it 😉

  3. Not like Google.

I think YouTube’s founders *like the Google team* and visa versa, but I think Google represented hugely significant search innovation at a key time where Youtube represents clever dudes pushing tons of junk video online at a key time.
This was almost as clever an overpricing trick as Mark Cuban’s deal with Yahoo, though Google has the stock to burn so they can easily survive this mistake.

I find that whole episode of taking down Michelle Malkin’s political views frightening on a couple of levels.
First is the straight out censorship, but second is the double-standard; the fact that while first-amendment-protected op-eds about Jihadist terrorists is taken down for being offensive (to who exactly? The Bin Laden Fan club?),
YouTube *still* has up there snuff videos made by terrorists of sodliers getting killed in Iraq, other questionable content, and of course a raft of copyright-violating material, etc.
