Hi John - I agree that in the long run companies will have to demonstrate how they deliver value based on data collection. But, the "good" news is that for now, there's no consensus on implementation of DNT. All this IE10 feature does is signal that DNT is enabled - it's just a flag that the tracking program would have to adhere to. But it doesn't prevent cookies from being set, javascript from executing, etc. The people to watch are the tracking companies. When Google begins to roll out the feature in Google Analytics then it will matter. So at this point, it's no big deal... but it could be if the the gov't gets involved. General consensus is EU will lock it down, but US will not.

The sword is the blunt default-ON option, with an entirely arbitrary and invented definition of what "tracking" is and isn't. This threatens to put sites and services' revenues at the whim of a small elite of browser makers and it hurts their ability to harness useful third party data. Forcing business models on content and web service providers, and causing the silo'ing of data among separate first parties (large media sites and tech conglomerates), for nominal privacy gains is bad for users and society too.

Yes, and I can imagine many other approaches as well. The point is to get some kind of back-and-forth based on the value exchange to become rote.
