If only they’d add a “Like” button to Google’s results. Oh wait….they kinda have.
I do believe Google’s response to the wave that is Facebook’s Open Graph and Like is going to define the company for years to come. The game’s afoot in the search+social space.
Yes, there is a similarity, however it is a huge difference that the FB like button is on the page itself.
I think it was a huge step for FB, and can push them toward to become a foundational infrastructure of the next generation of the web.
…..It very interesting to see how much Facebook’s move to close off the internet has awaken their competitors…..I think that what will come next is an evolution of the traditional technology business model that take values from members and developers and returns none…..

Personally, I believe that the FTC’s response to Facebook’s Open Graph will define both companies’ futures as well as the next generation of the web.
As I have said before (in comments on this website). It is game over for Google.
Facebook is going to dominate the search space because Facebook has the data which matters most in the relevance algorithm. Page Rank is dead.

More and more, Google will be treated like a dictionary or an encyclopedia. Used to answer general questions about the population of Uganda or the definition of “assuage,” but in many (most!) cases, your friends are more likely to provide you with (or point you to) a better answer than Google’s computers can.
Where should I eat in San Francisco tonight? Which digital camera should I buy? I’m planning to visit Lake Placid on vacation, where should I stay?

Of course YouTube just implemented “Like” doing away with the star rating. I have a feeling by the end of the year we’re going to be really tired of the “thumbs up” icon.
Just wait till spammers and SEO pros learn how to manipulate these for their own purposes. . .
