Interesting how Google is spinning the Nexus One. From the release:

Launches Nexus One, contributing further innovation to the Android ecosystem
MOUNTAIN VIEW (January 5, 2010) – Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) today unveiled a new way for consumers to purchase an Android mobile phone, a web store hosted by Google. The company is also launching the first phone offered through this new model, called the Nexus One, which combines the latest in hardware from HTC Corporation with the newest Android software.
There’s way too much coverage of this event to add much here, other than to say Google is walking a fine line, and there are plenty of players looking to push it off. But spinning Nexus One as a “new way to purchase an Android phone”? Priceless.
Update: You know, I’m thinking about this a bit more, and I think I see where Google is going with all of this. They want to break up the current stranglehold of how phones are distributed, marketed, and sold here in the US. I find that commendable, as a consumer, but precarious, were I Google.
The phone is too pricey for the general consumer. They are obviously targeting only a very specific segment of cellphone users.
Wait, so the new way to purchase an Android phone is…to buy it from Google?
I thought Google said that they weren’t going a mobile phone. When they spun it, and said, “well, we’re not doing the phone, our carrier partners are” there was still some minuscule shred of plausibility left.
Now that Google selling the phone themselves, directly to the consumer.. how can they not call this the Google Phone?

I’ll go back to a question to which I’ve never gotten a satisfactory answer: If they’re not telling the truth about doing a Google Phone, how am I supposed to believe them when they say they’ll protect my (gmail or web search) privacy? If they break one promise, what stops them from breaking the other?
dear jg your an absolute idiot they are protecting your account and your account details because they are legally bonded by the us law to protect them. if you want to be further re-assured that your account details are being protected you can ring up Google customer support and ask them not to send your ”gmail account” details to any of there subsidized companies.
In reality they released another device they control. They now dominate the entire cycle of cell phones. The fact that the phone is only available through Google should be troubling to cell phone companies. No one I talked to here at the John R. Carlisle Institute thought it was worth all the hype. Its basically the same phone as the already available Droid. Not leaps forward in technology. The big difference in the Nexus One is solely the manner of distribution.
