I asked if the person was full time or a contractor (Google has already acknowledged it is significantly shrinking its contract labor force) and she replied:

…full time eng on a critical path project. so were others.. 4-5 yr employees.

    Every company whether big or small, rich or poor is going to use the recession as an excuse to trim their poorest performing employees. Google included.

    That’s weird, because they’re still hiring. A friend of mine took a full-time engineering job there earlier this week, the same day they gave him the offer.

    The most obvious explanation is Robert’s, but I wouldn’t rule out the sort of confusion that’s regrettably common at companies the size of Google.

    I agree with Robert’s comment. Google is more recession-proof than the typical bricks/mortar company, plus historically, they’ve tended to care less about meeting wall street’s earnings expectations. Add to that, that they’ve got billions in the bank. With the ‘recession’, they’ve got an excuse to get rid of the dead weight.

    Don’t know but the severance pkgs for engs don’t sound too good. Don’t know if due to longevity=they got stock before. : )
