I’m late on Powerset (I just don’t have time to do the briefings anymore), but Mike has coverage here and Danny’s is here.
What I find interesting about Powerset is the refinement, which Danny covers well. The interface (in particular the response to query) is much more grammatical and conversational. That’s where the entire web is going, and it’s cool to see an example of it.
This type of processing only works for extremely conventional language — so it will generally work e.g. on documents that are a generation old (or more) — yes: I mean 20-30 years old. Newer language will not follow “grammatical rules” the same way as older language might (and even older language can easily become intractable — will be interested to see what “sense” Powerset might make of Bob Dylan lyrics ;P)
Also: this doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of jargon, dialect, … — let alone altogether different languages.
All in all: “Star Wars Won’t Work” (Frank Zappa)
