why all this nonsensical excuse-making for yahoo? is there a single google app that does _not_ use ajax extensively (not counting core search)?

Peter, I disagree. I think that google is better at some things – typically algorithmic functions that require extensive coding (and little human interaction).
Yahoo is a different kind of company – more of a true media company. Evidence that they are better from a social aspect is that google answers was shut down while yahoo answers has flourished.
Google does use AJAX with gmail, but if you look at their highest traffic property (search) they don’t – email is yahoo’s most popular service.
