The issue of automated algorithms vs human editorial should not be a divisive one, as the ideal solution will be a combination that harnesses the strengths of both. Neither approach can work solely on its own, as algorithms lack the accuracy and wisdom of human judgement, while purely human editorial content is impractical due to the amounts of data and the lack of speed.

If an algorithm can be provided sufficient machine learning paths, where it can observe human behaviour and interactions with websites and extract the necessary judgements about those sites based on that data, it could provide a reasonably accurate search index order that would serve most queries - which is to a certain degree what Google is already doing now.

Good art. Google and Yahoo - the biggest rivals. The upcoming war between them is unavoidable. I also recommend 'The Search' book. Very helpfull. Greetings.

Just read 'The Search' - what a book! Could we have an updated version. I would also love to read book on Yahoo - any chance?

You know, I wish the big boys would get their shit together. Could you imagine a Yahoo that had real innovators and thinkers at the top of the management food chain? I understand the nature of the beast, it's business and they want to remain healthy with a steady profit. If they'd just make an effort to think about these problems in a non-traditional way, they'd surely make it rain.

With iY, Yahoo makes no pretense of objectivity - it is clearly steering searchers toward its own services, which it believes can satisfy the intent of the search. In effect, Yahoo is saying "You're looking for stuff on Usher? We got stuff on Usher, and it's good stuff. Try ours, we think it'll be worth your time."

For some time I've been trying to articulate, in a succinct fashion, what separates Yahoo and Google in terms of their approach to search, media, and ultimately culture. It came up today as I was writing, and damned if I got stuck. So in the spirit of other Friday sketches, I'm going to write out loud here on Searchblog, and depend on your forbearance and insights to get through the draught.

"Google seems to have gone to mostly advertising banners on other sites rather than their own.

But Yahoo has taken the opposite approach -- banners on their site and some contextual ads on other sites."

I would agree with these comments
