&lt;p&gt;You were actually more correct than you think.  There have been great strides made in preserving digital artifacts.  But most of the work is still under the radar.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Just rest assured that digital preservation is well under way, just not yet in the mainstream.&lt;/p&gt;
